NEIL MURRAY

“An outstanding singer/songwriter capable of generating great enthusiasm and warmth in his audience, Neil Murray was welcomed by his fans at the 2006 Woodford Folk Festival with absolute adoration”. Bill Hauritz, Executive Director, Woodford Folk Festival.

“Murray’s art lies in saying what he knows and not one word more” Author and journalist Martin Flanagan, The Age.

“The hard edged reality of life on the fringes as well as the poetic grandeur of the landscape are all there in his powerful body of work”. Singer/songwriter, Shane Howard.

After more than two decades of writing, recording and performing, Neil Murray is one of Australia’s most respected songwriters. He was a founding member of the pioneering indigenous rock group the Warumpi Band. Since 1989 he has forged a solo recording career that has produced the albums “Calm & Crystal Clear”, “These Hands”, “Dust”, “The Wondering Kind”, “Going the Distance” and the 2CD compilation “About Time”.

In 1995 he received the APRA song of the year award for “My Island Home” a heart felt song of belonging originally written for the Warumpi Band and re-recorded by Christine Anu. “My Island Home” has become something of an unofficial anthem for Australia and featured in the closing ceremony of the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.

Other tracks such as “Good Light In Broome”, “Big Truck”, “Late this night” Broken Song”, “Long Grass Band”, “Circumstances“Spirit”, “Myall Creek”, “Tom Wills Would” and “Native Born” have received significant airplay and critical acclaim.

Musically diverse and lyrically lean, Neil Murray’s songs stride over country, folk and rock to emotive ballads of powerful resonance. Described by Nashville Scene as having a “penetrating social consciousness” it is not surprising that he is also an accomplished author, poet and playwright.

Neil Murray is an active environmentalist and a long time supporter of the rights of indigenous people, wherever they remain in the world. He believes the key to our continued survival on earth is held in local indigenous land practice and cultural wisdom.

Neil Murray continues to write and perform, appearing at music festivals in Australia, Europe and America. Most recently he performed in Nashville as part of the Americana Music Conference.
